It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

Hello again.

A seven-day family vacation to San Diego inadvertently turned into a two month-long hiatus from blogging.

San Diego is absolutely beautiful. We had a such a fun time there and completely fell in love with the city. So much so that I think we’d really consider retiring there one day. The city is so laid back and you’re right near the water. And there was so much to do, especially for S. We hit the famous San Diego Zoo, the beach, Sea World, saw the seals and sunset at La Jolla and visited Cabrillo and Balboa Park. We really had the best time.

But we also had the worst time. Ok, maybe worst is a little over-dramatic, but if I’m being honest, it was definitely hard. The many moments of squealing laughter and excitement were nearly matched with moments of tears, tiredness and tantrums. Vacationing with a one-year-old is not easy, especially when they’re sick.

S got sick right before we went on vacation. She started to not feel well at the All-Star Game (our flight was the next day) and instead of leaving right away, which is probably what we should have done, we had a bad parent moment and tried to tough it out as long as she could, because, well, 1. we were having fun 2. we were star struck and 3. what are the chances of us going to another All-Star Game?

But, what goes around comes around, and in the end, we all definitely paid for us enjoying our bad parent moment. For the first couple days of our vacation, S was feeling pretty bad – not eating, not sleeping and overall, just miserable. Which means that the parents were also not eating, not sleeping and overall, just miserable. It’s interesting how one tiny little person’s mood can affect the dynamics of their parent’s relationship. I think the saying is, “happy wife, happy life?” Well, for anyone with kids, it’s “happy children, happy parents.”

So yea, it wasn’t easy. And next time, I will make sure we all get plenty of rest before our vacation. But in between the flashes of crankiness and exhaustion, there are moments of gold that will stay with me forever.
